Before I start diving in, I just want to say I’ve never owned an Xbox console. It’s not because I have some weird agenda against them, but because of how I grew up. My first console was a PlayStation 2 and my first handheld was a GameBoy Advanced. I’ve always stuck with Nintendo and PlayStation, but I’ve always been aware of what Xbox was doing. That being said, after surviving my first E3 and watching all the press conferences, Xbox not only impressed me, but they’ve made me strongly consider adding an Xbox One X to my collection.
Going into my first E3, I went in very open-minded. I didn’t expect to play much and I didn’t think I’d get to talk to many people working in the games industry. Overall, I got to play 13 games and I met so many games professionals. For my first E3, that’s a good amount of games I got to play and that’s partly in thanks to Xbox. Rather than having a booth at the convention center, Xbox had their main presence be in the Microsoft Theater. I was curious as to how they’d set up all the demos and after going into the theater, I was really impressed. The theater was filled with demo stations ranging from Battlefield V, Ori and the Will of the Wisps, and Kingdom Hearts 3. A thing I told people was I had a better chance at playing something in the theater rather than at the convention itself. While E3 is a massive spectacle and I loved it, there’s a lot of long demo lines and most of them were capped off when I got there. At the Microsoft Theater, almost every line was short and the wait as long. Of the 13 games I played, three of them were at the theater (Kingdom Hearts 3, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and Ori and the Will of the Wisps).
Besides the theater, they also had my favorite E3 2018 press conference. There were high expectations going into it and they easily exceeded them. Showing off 50 games and announcing five new studios left me, like many people, very impressed. They had a wide variety of games to show (JRPGs, shooters, racing games, fighting games, etc.) while also bringing back franchises like Halo and Gears of War. It’s also nice they showed off the adaptable controller at the show. It’s amazing and gives even more people a chance to play games.
Among the many reasons why my first E3 was incredible is because of Xbox. The choice to move their presence to their own theater was smart and I hope they do it again next year. Everyone working the event was happy, helpful, and made the experience even more fun. In my opinion, they had the best press conference and had a diverse catalog of games to show off.
